New ARC Advisory Group research on the Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and PLC-based Programmable Automation Controllers (PACs) market reveals that a slowdown in nearly all markets worldwide is likely in the next two years. After two years of robust growth, the market for PLCs and PLC-based PACs will slow down considerably in 2019 as key economies face recession. After a decade of continuous economic expansion driven mainly by China, this slowdown will expose just how much economic interdependencies have shifted.
“The PLC market is coming off two strong growth years, following seven years of ups and downs in the wake of the 2009 financial crisis. That growth spurt is now finished, and the prognosis for the next five years is sobering. PLC purchases depend heavily on the mood of industrial players who invest in equipment for the long-term, and that mood has been darkened recently by the cooling off in China and the uncertainty caused by trade wars between the worlds’ largest economies,” according to David Humphrey, Research Director at ARC Advisory Group and key author of ARC’s PLC and PLC-based PACs Global Market Research report.
Today, China is one of the three pillars of industrial strength, on equal footing with Europe and North America. While all three depend directly on one another, their business and investment cycles are not always in sync. For industrial players, this exacerbates decision-making and economic planning.
“Technology-wise, PLCs are becoming part of the ‘automation edge’, but the role of the PLC as an edge device is still evolving,” added Humphrey.
